When I play a character like that, that is a bit of a challenge because how most of us have a desire to be liked. I think Prince is also, in many ways, he's perhaps not the nicest guy that you'll ever meet. This character is very different from any character that I've ever played before. The biggest challenge for me wasn't so much the physical aspects, although they were challenging. What was the hardest thing for you this season? Jessica was saying it wasn't the swimming or the ants but climbing the waterfall that was the hardest thing for her during filming. Shooting in the market, there were people running through our frames who may or may not have been with our production. Mark Boal, our director for that episode and our showrunner, was really excited about that because he liked the chaos and the element that it brings, like the beach. We would be shooting there, and there would still be people partying from the night before in certain sections. I don't think too many tourists go there. I've been to Cartagena quite a few times, and that is a different world. That marketplace is just outside of the city center of Cartagena, about a 15-minute drive. By the end, I started to feel more comfortable with all the action stuff that we were doing. Talking about your earlier question, if it becomes more natural or easier, that was also a sequence that we shot very much towards the end of the shoot. How was it filming that? It strikes me as a very complicated scene to bring to life. My favorite action scene in the series is the sequence where you're being chased through the marketplace, and it's just chaos. I want you to find this in the dark." We were like, "What do you mean we have to find this stuff in the dark? Why is there a sleeping bag?" He went, "I forgot to tell you, we're going right now!" We arrive, and he has everything in his garage and tells us, "You start packing on this side, and you have to know where it is. We're going tomorrow, but you want us to come over tonight to check it out?" We did it anyway because we wanted to show how motivated we are. Luke and I were like, "This is ridiculous. I want to show you all the stuff we're going to take for the hike tomorrow." The day before we were supposed to go, at 8 or 9 pm, he said, "Just come over to my place. He told us to take the right shoes and wear some layers. As part of our training, Mitch Hall, the former Navy SEAL who took over responsibility for prepping us, had decided to take us on a little hike. I felt that came very naturally to us, and that started as soon as we started prepping. I don't know how much of that mirrors it, but we realized that to play these two characters who are so connected at the hip - brothers almost - we needed to build that relationship as colleagues, too. How much of Prince and Bambi's dynamic mirrors your own with Luke? You're in the literal trenches with Luke Evans, training and filming together in the jungle for 10 months. By Episode 3 or 4, from my experience, you're at the point of finding the character, and things start to happen a bit more intuitively. You get a little more time with your character - 10 months versus two or three months. I guess that's one of the pleasures of shooting a show versus a movie. Īfter months of shooting, it becomes a bit more natural, which is a great feeling. In the beginning, that feels very unnatural because you've only had a couple of weeks of training, and then you're pretending like you know what you're doing. When you're doing something that is that grueling for that long, filming on location in Colombia and training with the Navy, how much of your performance becomes instinctual and how much is more conscious?īecause it takes place over such a long period, a couple of months into it, some things start to become instinctual, especially when we're talking about some of the technical stuff and physical aspects of the way these Special Forces operators move. It was definitely very challenging in that regard. Yeah, absolutely, because to shoot these 10 episodes, it took place over a period of 10 months, and to stay physically in character, I really stepped up my fitness regimen. Of all the projects you've done, is this the most physical role you've ever done?
